Dakota's Garden

Intern Profile

I want to work at the garden because: It's an excellent oppritunity to do something that I love is a more communal way. I also get to learn new tricks, different opinions, and other syles of gardening.

Two of my personal goals for working at the Dallas Youth Garden this summer are:

1. To create a garden that has a large variety of plants and be succesful with it.

2. To develop a relationship with other people in the garden that I may have not known before.

Two things I hope to learn for working at the Dallas Youth Garden are:

1. A new trick to gardening that I haven't tried.

2. If squash will succesfully grow on a small trellis.

I think my biggest challenge will be: Openly sharing ideas

My favorite vegetable or fruit is: Zucchini

I hope to contribute this to the garden this year: New and creative ideas such as different recipies or experiments.

What were people like? Many people were very nice and stopped to see what it was about.

What did you learn? I learned that when in marketing or doing anything similar to that, you really need to be confident and sometimes even a little pushy to get people's attention.

Problem: Weeds overtook my lettuce and no seeds were showing up

Solution: I quickly weeded the lettuce row using a hula hoe and then replanted lettuce seeds

Public Speaking

Date: July 25

Organization: The Rotary Club and anyone that was eating breakfast in the park

Approximate number of audience: We announced what our garden was about on the microphone and I would assume that about 100 people heard, but only about 12-15 people came over to the booth.

Presentation Length: Our presentation was around a minute long, possibly more if questions were asked.

Presentation: We discussed where our garden was located, what we grew, where the fruits and vegetables went, and how much food we have donated within the past 9 years.

How it went: It was pretty easy, however confronting the people was a lot more difficult that I thought it would be for me.

What leadership skill was needed: Comunication, confidence, Stragety, and persuasion.
